The Science Faculty is one of the most experienced in the Coffs Harbour region. Our staff demonstrates academic strengths across the whole range of the Science curriculum, having specialists in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Marine Studies and Physics. In addition to the traditional subjects we also have two staff trained as Certificate 4 Primary Industries teachers.
Many of the staff have current experience in HSC examination marking across many subject areas, as well as Board of Studies experience, either as past consultants, curriculum developers or examination committee members. This adds a wealth of experience to our delivery of HSC courses.
Within the school, the Science staff have initiated and managed a number of 'Whole School'; programs, including the following:
Year 9 Snow excursion (every August)
Year 11 Heron Island excursion (every November). This popular excursion is considered by participating students as their "best" experience at Coffs Harbour High School. This format has been replicated by a number of other NSW schools)
Year 7 "GO GREEN KEEP COFFS CLEAN" - a local environmental fund raising initiative - every March
Manage Commonwealth Government I and II Water Grants
Year 11 primary industries- Boambee Dune Care initiative.
Self-Select Class in Years 9 and 10
By the end of year 8, if becomes obvious that some students have a keen interest in Science and that academic or parallel streaming does not cater to their needs. The 'Self-Select' class is designed to cater for Science students who are particulalrly enthusiastic about Science. It is expected that students in this class will be highly focussed and want to maximise their potential as well as participate in various competitions. Hopefully students from this class will have a leaning towards a career in some Science related field. They will be required to sign a contract. To be considered for this class, a number of criteria have to be met. These include but not limited to: high level of attendance, attend extra-curricula activities (often after school), be positive and co-operative, enter all science competitions as they arise, complete all assignments on time and maintain a high standard of course work. If they do not meet the standards, their place will be declared vacant and moved to another class.

The Science Faculty encourages students to participate in the UNSW Australian Science competition. This is an excellent way for younger students to develop confidence in their science skills.
