Support Services

School Counsellor
The school counsellor is available to assist students to sort out problems, improve their relationships and improve their potential. This usually involves individual or small group counselling, however, it may also involve parent/caregivers or individual assessment.

Confidentiality is a feature of counselling at school except in circumstances where the student is at risk of harm or may harm others.

A school counsellor is available most days and can be contacted in two ways. Firstly, students may self refer by filling out a referral form placed on the noticeboard outside the counsellor's officer. After completing the form it is placed under the counsellor's door. You will be contacted with an appointment time. Secondly, parent/caregivers may contact the school to make an appointment with the School Counsellor
STLA (Support Teacher Learning Assistance)
The STLA is available as a whole school resource.  In Coffs Harbour High School the STLA is organised through three modes:
  • Consultancy with teachers about curriculum, student needs and goals.
  • Withdrawal of students who need special help in particular areas.
  • Team Teaching where the whole class benefits from having two qualified teachers in the classroom.

The STLA can be found in the Resource Room which is located on the lower level of the library. It contains numerous resources for borrowing by teachers and students are able to borrow Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime.
The STLA assists schools to cater for those students in regular classes who are experiencing difficulties in basic areas of learning.

In carrying out this role, the STLA will;

  • assist in the identification and assessment of students with learning difficulties
  • work with others to plan and design appropriate programs for such students
  • work with regular class teachers on the implementation of programs for such students
  • help monitor and evaluate programs for students with learning difficulties
